Adding a lightbar to your vehicle is a perfect way to provide extra illumination on rough terrain. While these bars are often used for driving off-road, many brands do not meet DOT standards for use while driving on roads. Here at Diode Dynamics, we offer DOT lightbars that can be used both on and off the roads, helping to provide superior illumination wherever you need it.
The US Department of Transportation sets standards regarding which lights are street legal and other important safety standards. These standards extend to all states unless the DOT does not have a policy regarding a specific issue, at which point state laws take effect. We have manufactured our six-inch light bars to conform to DOT standards for supplemental street-legal lighting.
The other major authority with regards to lighting is the Society of Automotive Engineers or SAE. This is an organization that allows informed engineers to come to a consensus on what the standards should be for various industries, including the automotive industry. While the SAE’s standards are not legally binding, they are used as a guideline for engineers across a wide range of industries.
Our six-inch Stage Series Lightbars have both DOT and SAE compliant beam patterns. When we set out to develop the best lightbars on the market, our team of engineers put our designs through rigorous testing to ensure that the beam pattern met both DOT and SAE standards. Using state-of-the-art optics, our lightbars provide incredible output. Just one of our 6-inch lightbars can produce as much output as the generic 30-inch light bars you can find on eBay or Amazon.
We offer two-beam pattern options if you would like to use our DOT lightbars on the road. The first pattern is our driving pattern, which is designed to supplement your high beams. This lens creates a rectangular beam of light with a 20W*8H degree pattern that is ideal for illuminating the road ahead at high speeds. We also offer our lightbars with a fog/wide pattern, which can increase visibility in inclement weather. The wide pattern lens produces a 100W*8H degree spread of light to supplement your fog lights.
In six-inch size, when installed as a pair and aimed in accordance with your state's regulations, the Driving pattern meets SAE J581 as a Driving/Auxiliary High Beam Light, and the Wide pattern meets SAE J583 as a Foglamp, for legal on-road use. Please check your local laws and regulations for aiming, installation, and applicability.
For off-road driving, we also offer a flood pattern that produces an incredibly uniform 80W*50H degree spread of light. Unlike many brands whose flood optics produce a heavily diffused spot of light, our lights use a true optically designed output that maximizes the light cast across the full area of its spread. This pattern is perfect for illuminating a worksite or increasing off-road visibility at low speeds.
The process of switching between these patterns is quick and easy. The pattern is produced by the outside lens and you can find additional lenses for your lightbars in our off-road accessories section of our website. To switch to a different lens pattern, you simply need to remove a few screws from the faceplate of the light, swap out the lenses, and then reattach the faceplate.
