Can You Use LED Light Pods as Fog Lights?
Fog lights are dedicated lamps aimed at a steeper or downward-facing angle. Unlike headlights which throw light further in front of the vehicle, fog lights spread light in a much broader view to prevent the light from being scattered by fog and creating poor visibility.
LED Light Pods can be used as fog lights. They provide a significant upgrade from factory halogen fog lights with an increase in overall light output.
LED Light Pods provide significantly more output than an LED replacement bulb for your factory fog light housing. Most factory fog light housings depend on the existing reflectors to direct the light output of the LED or Halogen bulb.
Stage Series LED Light Pods have special Total Internal Reflection (TIR) optics. Traditional optics lose light internally to glare, so not all of the produced light shines on the target. The custom-engineered TIR optic in Stage Series LED Light Pods collects all of the light from the LED and directs it where you need it.
Are LED Light Pods Road Legal?
Yes, they are! Stage Series LED Light Pods are available in a road-legal SAE Fog or SAE Driving beam pattern.
All Stage Series LED Light Pod beam patterns were designed to shape the light output in a highly functional beam pattern.
The SAE Fog provides an extremely wide field of view, with high-intensity output over an entire 80-degree spread, making it an ideal upgrade from your factory fog light.
The SAE Driving is designed to supplement your high beams, but it's also great for general illumination. Rather than a traditional "spot" pattern, the Stage Series Driving pattern shines in an 18x8-degree spread. this provides enough width of focused light to fully illuminate the road at speed.
When installed as a pair and aimed in accordance with your state’s regulations, the Driving White pattern meets SAE J581 standards as a Driving/Auxiliary High Beam Light, and the Fog pattern meets SAE J583 standards for legal, on-road use. Though you should always check your local laws and regulations for aiming your fog lights.
Why Would You Want to Use an LED Light Pod as a Fog Light?
LED Light Pods offer much more functionality than bulb-based fog lights. These functions include:
To begin with, LED Light Pods deliver a significant increase in light output when compared to factory-installed fog lights.
Stage Series LED Light Pods combine TIR optics, custom molded lenses, and high-intensity LED emitters to deliver a much better light output that you can see.
What Colors Are Available?
When using LED Light Pods as fog lights, there are two road legal color options to choose from: White and Yellow.
Our cool white LED Light Pods shine in a 6000k color temperature, which matches most factory LED lighting. This makes it a great choice for those seeking a uniform look with the rest of their vehicle lighting.
The selective yellow option shines at a 3000k color temperature. The yellow color option has a distinctive look and is preferred by some for its aesthetic value; however, it does provide function by providing a better contrast in poor weather conditions. This is helpful when driving in fog, rain, or snow. It is also helpful in dusty, off-road conditions.
Backlight Functionality
Stage Series LED Light Pods bring the additional benefit of adding another feature when installed as a fog light.
They include a distinctive backlight in an eye-catching brilliant amber color. This allows you to double the functionality of your fog lights by adding an accent light when the higher-powered main beam isn’t in use.
The lower-powered backlight still fully illuminates the TIR (Total Internal Reflection) Optic of the LED light pod, providing a unique accent lighting that you won’t find in other LED Light Pods.
The additional accent light gives your vehicle enhanced visibility and a unique look that sets you apart from the rest of the pack.
Which LED Light Pods Are Best for Fog Lights?
At Diode Dynamics, we offer a variety of LED Light Pods that can be used as fog lights. Each LED Light Pod features higher output intensity than any other compact light on the market.
Our SSC1 and SS3 LED Light Pods are the most common type of LED Light Pod used for the fog light application.
Stage Series SSC1 LED Light Pods
Stage Series C1 LED Light Pods are the most compact option offered by Diode Dynamics, to date. The pod has a single high-intensity LED emitter. However, don’t let its small stature fool you.
The SAE Fog SSC1 produces up to 6,000 candela of light output in an incredibly useful 98x9-degree beam pattern. This is more than enough to illuminate the front of your vehicle and upgrade your factory fog lights.
Stage Series SS3 LED Light Pods
Stage Series 3” LED Light pods are larger than the SSC1 and feature 4 LED chips for a significant increase in light output.
Stage Series LED Light pods are available at three different power levels. All options use high-intensity LED emitters and TIR optics for unmatched focus and overall light output.
Sport uses high-intensity LEDs and is the best bang for your buck.
Pro steps things up in a big way with double the total power of the Sport Model.
Max is designed with cutting-edge automotive emitters for both high power and extreme intensity. If you’re looking for the absolute best in light performance for fog lights, the SS3 Max is the answer.
The SAE Fog SS3 Max delivers an incredible 18,000 candela over an entire 80-degree spread. With that kind of light intensity, they are unrivaled by anything else on the market.
SS3 LED Fog Light Kits also come with another great functionality. That’s for use as Off-road lighting.
Off-Road Functionality
Just because the SAE Fog beam pattern is road legal, doesn’t mean that the LED Light Pods are only useful for on-road driving.
One of the best things about using LED Light Pods as fog lights is that all of the lighting power they provide is ideal as an off-road light.
With a wide beam pattern and impressive total light output, SS3 LED Light Pods are perfect for providing visibility on unpaved terrains. This off-road versatility is further proof that using LED Light Pods as fog lights is not just possible, but a good idea.
Is There Additional Wiring Involved in Using LED Light Pods as Fog Lights?
With our SS3 LED Fog Light Kits, there is no additional wiring needed to use LED Lights Pods as fog lights!
Simply remove your factory fog light assembly and ours will bolt right in its place! The wire adapters included with each of our fog light kits connect the lights to your factory bulb sockets
Thanks to custom-molded brackets, SSC1 and SS3 Fog Light Bracket kits can be installed on your vehicle in minutes.
Proven Reliability
Stage Series LED Light Pods have been extensively tested for long-term operation at -40 to 185 degrees Fahrenheit. They have also been tested against vibration, moisture intrusion, and corrosion. All of these tests are completed to SAE standards, just like factory components.
They’ve also been put to the test by on-road and off-road enthusiasts alike. So you know they’re more than up to the task of cutting through the fog on your daily commute or off-road adventure.
